In the Beginning
I never used to drink coffee. The taste of coffee turned my stomach, and I don’t like the smell of it.
About a year ago, I tried a sip of coffee with some flavored coffee creamer in it and I discovered that I like coffee…so long as it doesn’t taste or smell like coffee, and so long as it’s ice-cold (not even slightly warm).
Sugar Oil
I was buying a flavored coffee creamer that did a good job of masking the flavor. It was really good until I looked at the ingredient list. It’s pretty much just sugar, oil, and flavoring. Ugg! Since I was already hooked on drinking coffee, I had to come up with an alternative to the sugar oil I was drinking every morning.
A New Recipe
I started playing around with some ingredients and I came up with a really good homemade coffee creamer. The creamer was made from sweetened condensed milk, heavy whipping cream, a pinch of salt, and vanilla extract. It was amazing! It tasted exactly like melted vanilla ice cream! Every cardiologist across the world had to be cringing whenever I took a drink of my morning coffee with the creamer in it.
A (Slightly) Healthier Recipe
So, I decided to make a (slightly) healthier version of the creamer. My new recipe is still loaded with sugar, but it doesn’t have heavy whipping cream in it (see, I’m trying to compromise). I love it because it masks the coffee flavor of the, well…coffee, just like the first recipe did. And it gives the coffee a coconutty flavor. It’s really good!
I use sweetened vanilla almond milk and Better Half for the new recipe. The Better Half is similar to dairy half and half, except that it is half coconut cream and half almond milk. You can find the almond milk in the milk section of the grocery store. The Better Half is usually by the heavy whipping cream.
I like to mix the creamer in a bowl and then transfer it to a bottle that store-bought creamer comes in. It’s the perfect size to hold the homemade creamer and it’s easy to pour.
The creamer needs to be stored in the refrigerator and will last until the expiration date of the milk.
Let me know what you think about the coffee creamer!
