Cracker Jack is the newest addition to the budgie enclosure. We adopted him on the Fourth of July in 2019. We adopted Para in 2018. Cracker Jack lives with Para, in a three-foot square by four-foot tall flight cage. We don’t clip the budgies’ wings so they can fly as much as they want to in their tall cage. They have toys, bells, and ladders to play with and a bath dish. They don’t like taking baths so it’s really just a third water dish.
Training
After a few months of working with her, Doug taught Para to sit on his finger! Now, whenever we go into the bird room Para screeches and yells until Doug lets her climb onto his finger. She gets really loud and persistent when he’s at work and not obeying her! She’s starting to sit on Tabitha’s finger so hopefully soon she’ll settle down when Doug isn’t home!
Cleaning
To keep the cage clean, we use paper towels on the bottom of the budgie cage because they are easy to replace and they absorb water that is spilled. We also vacuum the seed husks every day so they don’t get blown all over the room when the birds flap their wings.
Food
The budgies have two water dishes and two food dishes in their cage so they can each have one. This way they don’t have to compete for food and water. They eat a seed mixture, millet, a cuttlebone, grit, and fresh vegetables.
